BFMS Membership

Please consider joining The Baltimore Folk Music Society. We count on memberships to help support folk events in Baltimore. The cost of the membership and any donations are now fully tax deductible!

We have a lot to offer the folk community. With your help, we can continue to do an outstanding job of providing enjoyment to the Greater Baltimore area.

Benefits of Membership in BFMS

  • Membership provides discounts at over 120 BFMS events throughout the year.
  • Reciprocity agreements that allow our members to attend events sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, and the Annapolis Traditional Dance Society at their member's rates.
  • A monthly newsletter provided to you by email as an attachment.
  • BFMS Scholarships
BFMS sets aside $500 a year for small grants to BFMS members seeking to upgrade skills that benefit the BFMS community. Scholarship funds may help to defer tuition or travel expenses to attend workshops, summer camps, and courses for dance musicians and callers. There is no deadline for applications, but they must be received before the event takes place. Send a letter describing the event, overall costs, how much you are requesting, and how assisting you would benefit the BFMS community to Scholarship Committee, BFMS, P.O. Box 65144, Baltimore MD 21209.

BFMS Events

Dance Events
Our regularly scheduled dance events include: American Contra and Square Dancing on Wednesdays and English Country Dancing on Mondays. All feature live music! We have free Beginner’s Workshops for American Contra and Square Dancing on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and free Beginner's Workshops for English Country Dancing on the 1st Mondays. We sponsor a monthly series of Traditional American Dances. It is referred to as the BFMS Second Saturday Contra Dance.
Dance & Music Camps
The Catoctin Mountain Music and Dance Weekend is held in Maryland's beautiful Catoctin Mountains in June. This low-cost family event features singing, jamming, dancing, stargazing, swimming, good food, and friendly people.
Special Dances and Events
Our special dances include the Mid-Winter Ball (Square and Contra Dancing), the Autumn Assembly Ball (English Country Dancing), and Dance Workshops in Clogging, Waltz, Jitterbug, Cajun, Zydeco, Scandinavian Dance and more!
Music & Singing
Our Coffee-Houses feature well-known and local folk performers for your listening (and singing!) pleasure. We also offer House Concerts – opportunities to hear some of your favorite singers and musicians in the intimate atmosphere of someone's home. House concerts are simply smaller versions of our regular concerts and are open to the public, check for special requirements due to more limited space. Our 2nd Friday Open Mic Friendly Coffeehouse offers a supportive atmosphere for anyone to take the mic. Watch our web site for news of other events, including rounds singing, open sings, and musician’s workshops, and special concerts.
